Making Contact...

Hello to my dear students and families...

It has been exciting since the first day of school last Friday!  Fifth grade has been a fantastic move for me to make, and I am glad I am here.  We have spent a majority of the week discussing rules and procedures.  These are the rules for this mustached teacher...

1. Follow directions quickly.
2. Use finger language for permission to speak. (holding up of the index finger)
3. Use finger language when you need to leave your seat. (holding up three fingers)
4. Make smart choices.
5. Keep dear Mr. Yates happy!

The students have done a fantastic job remembering rules and practicing procedures in the classroom.

We have also been spending time reading a book by my favorite author Patricia Polacco called The Junkyard Wonders.

The book details how students with disabilities were inspired by a teacher to overcome their struggles to achieve their dreams.  The plot of this story has provoked a lot of classroom discussion regarding its themes-acceptance, overcoming obstacles, and perseverance.  Students will be taking a comprehension quiz over this text on Friday, 8/14.

In conjunction with this story, we will be reading informational texts next week about function of the brain.  Stay tuned!

In the meantime, should you have any questions for me, do not hesitate to contact me at the school via phone or email.
